New Adventure: Yellowstone!

Yellowstone Park Map

The nickname “Wonderland” for Yellowstone is easily seen by just taking one day trip through the park.  We started on the north side of the park, as seen by the map.  We entered on the north side around 8:00 am and began our trek through the park.  We started at the Mammoth Hot Springs Park.  We were greeted at the welcoming sign by a bison!  These giants are so huge and magnificent to watch.  I have been in the badlands with my family when I was younger and we enjoyed taking trips to see the bison in the wild.  On our way out to Yellowstone we listened to Undaunted Courage which I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to know more about the Lewis and Clark expedition.  As we drove across the lands the words came to life of the hardship and discovery from Lewis and Clark. Lewis truly was able to see the wild and untamed lands of the west and Yellowstone attempts to capture a piece of that from their travels.  In the book, the author talked about the herds of bison 1,000+ roaming through the lands.  It is bewildering to think of that many bison roaming the plains and also so sad to think about our effect on their livelihood.  Before the 1800′s the settlers did market hunting in which they shot out of trains at the bison and killed as many as they could for sport.  According to the National Park Service, in 1902 we had approximately two dozen bison.  I can’t believe our nation has had to rebuild the species from just 24 bison!

A bison greeting!

My favorite bison was the one that greeted us to Mammoth Springs (see photo)

After Mammoth Springs park we drove east towards Lamar Valley and saw so many other species of animals: mule deer, elk, more bison, hawks and even an eagle.  We came to a few cars parked on the side of the road and stopped to see what they were looking at.  It was two bear cubs!  They were playing about 200 yards from the road.  This was such a sight! I have been to the BWCAW twice and never seen a bear there.  We parked the car and walked up the road to watch, Brice went a little further then I did. :-) However, when he got near the cubs he was standing next to a woman and her 2 teenage daughters (their South Dakota license plate read Hollywood).  They were yelling at the bear cubs like “heeeeeeere little bear! Come up here” and other various loud noises.   It was so disappointed to hear how they were disturbing nature and really ruined this experience for me.  One of my largest pet peeves is people that have absolutely no respect for the wilderness and animals around us.  She could have put us in a really dangerous situation since the mother was nowhere to be found.  Finally, a gentleman with a large camera set came up to her and asked her not to do that anymore.  We moved back to the car and started back on our way.

At Tower Roosevelt, we discovered that the road was closed. We had to turn around and continue west and south to continue our trip. On the way back, we stopped and talked with an older couple sitting on camp chairs in a pull-out.  The gentleman had a telescope pointed downwards in a canyon and his wife was doing needlepoint of a mallard duck.  It was such a sweet scene and we asked what the telescope was pointed at and replied “an osprey nest- it’s been here for about 10 years”.  It seemed that this couple had been sitting here for 10 years watching this Osprey nest in the same spot every year.  How amazing is that?!

We continued south and saw more bison and stopped at Norris Geyser Basin.  There was a boardwalk that continued through the forest and some amazing water and land features.  The gases were so strong with a sulfur (rotten eggs) odor I couldn’t stand it for too long.

This is a close-up of the water. All of this is in water. SO clear!

Another instance we stopped along the way and looked at a canyon I thought it would be a great photo-op for Brice and I.  We got out of the car and I put my camera on top of the car to take a photo.  If I look a little frightened in this photo it is because there was a very large crow hovering around us.  He obviously learned to come around people or had been fed in the past be people.  He came very close to our heads and flew from the tree in the photo to the road a few times.  I started to get scared and we jumped back in the car!  As some of you know I have bad luck with getting attacked by birds (seagull, crow and parrot) and so this was not a good place for me to be!

A crow is near our heads!

We continued our trip to old faithful.  I was told by many family members to make sure to see this attraction and I wanted to make sure we saw it!  We arrived to the attraction and noticed so many people in the area that had the same idea.  We also noticed a lot of people walking away from the geyser.  It had just gone off!  We missed it by about 15 minutes.  We read in a brochure that the geyser doesn’t go off for another 1 1/2 hours! So, we decided to continue on the road.  We had seen so many amazing things on this trip and figured that we could continue on without much regret.

I hope that everyone is able to see this majestic and amazing park.  If you have a convertible- even better! You wouldn’t have to get in and out of the car as much to take photos.  I would also suggest going in the off-season.  There were fewer people and less traffic.  We were able to go in and out of attractions without much hassle.  Also, be sure to have a camera always on and ready! You never know what you might see.  I will include a few more photos from the trip.

This bison is itching himself on a sign. I was surprised he didn’t break it!

New Adventure: We’re here!

We have officially arrived!  After 2,502 miles and 4 carwashes later, we pulled in yesterday to Cupertino, California to our temporary housing.  We started out on Friday May 11th from Stillwater, MN with a very tearful goodbye.  I miss all of my friends and family whom I am extremely close with back in the midwest.  I’ll do a (somewhat) quick overview of our road trip highlights.

Night 1: Bismark, ND  We ate at a quaint little diner with cheap, homestyle meals that was good and heavy.  (see photo right)  We like to use Yelp to find good local restaurants.  If you haven’t tried it, I really reccomend it for anyone who doesn’t want to eat at McDonalds and KFC while traveling.

Little Cottage Cafe, Bismark ND

Night 2: Bozeman, MT I have been to this city before to snowboard in Big Sky. It’s one of my favorite places to snowboard/ski and would really recommend it to anyone looking to learn how to board/ski. Lots of blue or green runs to learn and a great view of the mountain range.  We also ate at one of the best restaurants I have EVER dined at. Ted’s Montana Grill is worth the traveling just to see Bozeman and eat the delicious meals.   I had bison short ribs that fell off the bone and were so tender I didn’t even need a knife to cut them.  I loved their story and how they are eco-friendly.  Locally sourced veggies and meat were a definite highlight.  Brice had a bison burger with an over-easy egg, jam, peppers and cheese that was delectable.  I really enjoy trying the local fare- it usually turns out to my advantage and is sometimes surprising how much I can like foods I thought I would never try!  They also served home-made pickles instead of bread which I thought was a genius idea.  Why not cut down on our carb intake and start serving veggies instead of bread before a meal?  Their portions were also something to comment on.  After dining on “Midwest-sized” portions it was so satisfying to get a meal that left me feeling satisfied but not over-stuffed.  I really think many dining establishments need to follow this trend.  The short ribs I had were about the size of my fist (the recommended serving size) not the size of the plate like many places serve.  The serving of veggies was more then ample and they were also steamed.  What an amazing place to eat and connect with Brice over good food!

Night/Day 3:  We got up early from our hotel in Bozeman and started our drive to Yellowstone.  Both Brice and I had never been to Yellowstone and were very excited to see this legendary park.  The first thing that was noticeable immediately were the bison roaming around freely.  We came in from the north (see map) through Gardiner.  Then, we traveled east towards Tower/Roosevelt where we discovered the road was not open to complete the circle loop around and go south to Old Faithful.  So, we turned around and headed south on the west side of the upper loop.  We ended our tour of yellowstone at Old Faithful and headed south.  Since I have so many magnificent photos and stories of Yellowstone, I will write a separate post for that event.

That night we ended up in Jackson Hole, WY and stayed at a little hotel right on a creek and at at a local brewery.  It was delicious and we had great night after a very long day of travel.  I was so surprised at how tired I was after just sitting in the car most of the time and sight seeing!

Night 4: Another ski town that I have had the pleasure of visiting before is Park City, Utah.  Such a great place for nightlife and skiing.  On our way out to Park City we drove through some great mountain valleys and stopped at a restaurant that we have eaten at twice previously.  When I went with Brice out to Utah we spent a day at Pinnacle Reservoir outside of Ogden, UT and ate at The Oaks which is right on a river.  We even ended up sitting in the same booth. :-)

Another fun detour was taking my Ford Escape on a small off-roading adventure on Swan Lake Trail in Utah. We took the car on the trail up the mountain until we were not able to safely go any further because of snow.  See the map below and a photo of my car with the snow capped mountains in the background.  The two pins are where I took photos along the trail.

We arrived a little earlier to Park City since the drive from Jackson Hole was not as far.  We stayed at a hotel just down the mountain from the Olympic Village which Brice thought was pretty cool.  It closed right before we arrived, and it was disappointing that we were not able to see it.  So, the next best activity was shopping at the outlet mall just next door to our hotel!  :-)

Night 5: Carson City, NV After a very LONG drive throughout the salt flats and generally boring drive through Nevada we arrived in Carson City.  We did drive through Reno and decided against staying there.  We mostly relaxed after a long day of driving and had some great beef brisket sandwiches at the hotel.

Night 6: Lake Tahoe, CA  We crossed into California!  We made the trip to one of the largest and most clear lakes in the US.  We decided to stay in the area since we had both never been there and had heard great things about the hiking and recreational activities.  We hiked to Eagle Falls and relaxed near the lake for most of the day and enjoyed the flora and fauna.  The high season starts after Memorial Day weekend and therefore there was not much to do for kayak or ATV rentals.  I have a few photos to post from that area and will share the link later from this leg of our trip.  We ate lunch at an Irish pub and looked over a Seirra Nevada map of all of the local attractions in the area.  The map is littered with green areas that outline state parks- all areas for us to explore!  It made me really excited to see all of the different and unique camp sites and hiking trails we have yet to conquer.

Night 7: Cupertino, CA  We met with the SuiteAmerica representative and arrived in Cupertino around 3:00 May 17th.  We are in temporary housing in a great little apartment community.  It’s definitely different the streets of Ames. Although there are many amenities that Cupertino has that Ames doesn’t- I still miss the small-town atmosphere of the Iowa town.  We said “see ya real soon!” to so many dear friends and family members I can’t help but be a little homesick for the familiar.  I am sure that come fall I will miss the distant sound of Jack Trice roar and hoards of people wearing cardinal and yellow.  There is a distinct energy and ambiance of that town that I miss very much.

I have so many stories to tell about Yellowstone, but need photos to accompany them.  I will be posting soon!  And as always if any of our friends or family are out in the ‘Frisco/San Jose area please contact us.  We would love to see you!

New Adventure: Launch

The Escape is packed and we are on our way. A tearful goodbye was had by all this morning when my mom cooked us breakfast- French toast. It seems to be the standard before any big event with my family. I will miss everyone, especially my cat, California, a sweet calico that has been deemed a “trophy kitty”.

We are on our way to California today and I would like to thank everyone for their support and friendship through this transition. As many of you know I am extremely close to my family and this move has (so far) not been easy. Although the parting was inevitable for this trip, we said “see you soon” instead of a goodbye. As for now, I am signing off and going “off the grid” until our arrival in San Jose.

M-I-C “see ya real soon!” K-E-Y “why? Because we like you!” M-O-U-S-E!

New Adventure: T-1 day to launch

Well, we are really down to crunch time.  We leave for San Jose, California and here is a general map of our route that we will be embarking on Friday morning.

I have been staying with my parents since I left Ames this last weekend. What a bittersweet weekend.  Brice graduated with his Masters of Science in Human Computer Interaction and Computer Engineering which was so exciting and I was so proud of his achievements.  Watching him walk across the stage made me feel so incredibly proud of everything that he has worked so hard to achieve it evoked aspirations of doing something great myself. :-)

As some of you know, I have had trouble finding what I am truly passionate about.  I understand that life is a state of current flux and this is a new chapter in my life, but it is at times a bit jarring to have a path set ahead with no real clear directions.  In San Jose there are so many opportunities to be had I don’t know where to start!  In my temptations to plan everything: I am going to get settled in San Jose and then search for some great networking and volunteer opportunities.  I also need to get involved with a yoga studio asap!  I miss my yoga practice everyday.  I have tried to do a session on my own with an app, but it just isn’t the same.

My recent trip to Disney World did inspire a little creative thoughts and directions for me.  Every time I visit the parks I find myself truly believing that anything is possible.  Hearing and seeing the ambiance of Disney totally immerses me in a different, more care-free attitude which I find can help release any tensions or fears of the unknown.  Regardless of what others say I think we all have an inner child and there is just something so exhilarating to be involved with the culture.

I loved the gorillas- they were so playful.  Animal Kingdom has so many different species of animals and has changed so much since I last visited. They are much more focused on conservation and sustainability.  Every animal area talked about how many of each species were found in the wild and what we can do to help conserve the eco-system.  I was very impressed.

The Epcot lights show was incredible! Amazing fireworks (below) from Epcot.

This is part of the Epcot international flower and garden festival.  They made these completely out of natural shrubs and leaves and used sustainable dyes that have no harmful chemicals.  They also featured gardens and demonstrations on how to grow gardens that assist with bee pollination, butterflies, and water filtration.  Cool!

New Adventure

Since my fiance and  I will be relocating to the San Jose area in May, I will share our experiences with everyone via this blog.  We will be “off the grid” from May 11th-21st during our road trip from Minnesota to California.  This is to allow us to de-stress and connect without the distractions of phones, Facebook, work, school, volunteering and general life. :)

So far we have started the pre-packing, organizing phase of our move.  We are getting ready for the moving trucks to come and pack up our things.  We are purging our closets, pantry and getting rid of a lot of things to people that might really need them. (example, Salvation Army) Then, after we drive out and arrive on the 21st or 22nd of May we will be in temporary housing. Then, from there we will be looking for permanent housing in the San Jose area.  We will hopefully get all of the things we are looking for from our “wish list” for an apartment!

I will be keeping everyone posted with photos and update from the move!
